The Elegance of Black And White
Update Any Room Piece With This Chic Colour Combo
The colour combination of black and white has always been a classic pairing and will stand the test of time.
Black and white has been a backdrop for interior designs for centuries from the floor at the Versailles Grand Trianon to modern showrooms and contemporary designers such as Christian May.
It’s a Colour Combination You Can Very Rarely Go Wrong With.
There are plenty of ways to transform furniture using this colour combo such as our friend Katrina from Malenka Originals in Canada has demonstrated.
Using Graphite as the dominant colour, Katrina has elegantly added a stripe off centre. Using the natural wood and Old White as a divider line has really helped to add depth and contrast.
Create This Look At Home
You will hear critics of dark colours say that colours such as black will shrink a room; however this is untrue if it is contrasted by a lighter object placed in front or lighter adjacent walls.
Keep plenty of white in the room if you do not want to create a closed in feel and add contrasting shades such as lavender which can compliment these two shades.
Before I paint a piece of furniture I always like to play around with painting different areas in contrasting shades to see how they will look next to each other. The most popular being drawers painted in a different colour to the shell of the furniture, however that seems to have become the norm when trying to be different.
Think of different ways you could place black and white together on furniture to really make a stand out piece that will be cutting edge yet classic.
